This year, we are offering The Space Journey 2006, eighth Space Journey, at Caltech on Aug 18th
& 19th. As was in 2005, it will be co-sponsored by KASA (Korean-American Aerospace Scientists'
Association) and KSEA (Korean-American Scientists & Engineers' Association) Southern California
Chapter. These are non-profit organizations, and the camp is organized strictly by volunteers from
local aerospace companies and universities.
Students will have an opportunity to tour JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) and Caltech (California
Institute of Technology). Students will be involved with many hands-on projects. Activities include
constructing and flying a model airplane, predicting and practicing very precise projectile motion, and
at the same time we learn the scientific principles behind them. We place special emphasis on
Newton's Laws of Motion and many of the science process skills such as experimentation, prediction,
and trial and error. In addition, Boeing provides C-17 simulation station so that students can
experience the taking off and landing an airplane by actually piloting the simulator. Then we offer
students a chance to perform analysis of their experiment and present its results.
Furthermore, the students will be interacting with distinguished professionals from JPL, Boeing, Raytheon,
Northrop Grumman and others , and professors from UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton.
At the end of the program, each student will receive a completion certificate , and the best team
will receive a recognition. In addition, one student who has shown the best leadership quality
and one student who has shown the most enthusiasm will be recognized.
